Canaima National Park, established on June 12, 1962, has an extension of 3 million hectares, located in the extreme southeast of Venezuela; south of the Orinoco river in Bolívar State.

Doubtless to say that, it is a true and majestic jungle paradise, which can be visited by air and with local guides and from the Pemón-Kamarakoto ethnic group who can take you along trails or by river on artisanal curiaras (indian boat). The impressive natural formations of the mountains (tepuy) offer the visitor the most varied and incomparable landscapes, green savannahs, tropical fauna and flora, moriche palms (Mauritia flexuosa), streams, mighty tributaries and spectacular waterfalls.

In Canaima you will find isolated mountains, unique in their kind, with flat tops that receive the name of Tepuy, a word from the indigenous Pemón "Tüpü" which means Mountain. They are ancient rock formations, with an estimated age of three thousand eight hundred million years. The most outstanding tepuy in this area is the Auyantepuy, with an area of 700 km2; also known as "Devil's Mountain", from whose summit, at a height of more than a thousand meters, the highest waterfall in the world falls into the void. This waterfall received the name of Kerepacupay (Körepá- Ku´pö Vená) by the indigenous Kamarakotos; however, it is universally known as Angel Falls, because it was discovered from the air by the American aviator Jummy Angel on October 9th, 1937. When said aviator died, his ashes were scattered over the Auyantepuy, according to his last will. .
